THE CRIPPLING EFFECTS OF SLEEP DEPRIVATION

7.5-9 hours a day.

It sounds so impossible for us adults to have a nice, long, restful sleep as stated as above. With all the works, all the academic tasks, all the gadgets, all the fun in the television, all the best entertainment shows especially footballs, humans can barely have a good night rest. Lacking sleeps brings more cons than the pros, affecting the body and the soul as well. In the era where technology controls humans, humans have a very little belief on how sleep deprivation may even lead to death, in some cases.

Sleep deprivation occurs when you failed to get enough sleep. It is also known as sleep debt. Sleep is very essential to the body because it restores the energy needed for us for the following day. According to Harvard Medical School, studies show that sleeping less than five hours a night increases the risk of death from all causes by about 15 percent. Sleep deprivation is dangerous to our mental and physical health and can dramatically lower our quality of life. Below are the crippling effects of sleep deprivation:

1.) Central Nervous System
As the body sleeps, the brain is in charge of resting busy neurons and forming new pathways so we will be ready to face the morning. Sleep deprivation leaves the brain exhausted. Hence, it cannot perform its duties well. One of the obvious impact is sleepiness which may gets in the way of our decision-making process and negatively impact the short term memory and our long term memory. We may also have a short temper and become emotionally stable with all the sleep debts . Overall cognitive functions are impaired. We can be affected by a phenomenon called as micro sleep too, which is a condition when we are asleep for a few seconds without us realizing. It can be very harmful especially if we are driving.

2.) Immune System
When we are sleeping, the body produces protective cytokines and infection-fighting antibodies and cells. They fight off foreign substances and by sleeping, it gives the immune system to gain more energy to defend against illnesses. Losing sleep will surely take us longer to recover from our sicknesses.

3.) Digestive System
According to Harvard Medical School, a few studies have found a link between lack of sleep and weight gain. Sleep deprivation increases the production of stress hormone, cortisol. Lacking sleep lowers our level of hormones called as leptin which tells the brain when we had enough when we eat. Plus, it increases the level of a biochemical named ghrelin, an appetite stimulant. Sleep deprivation also leads to producing more of insulin which promotes fat storage and may cause diabetes.

4.) Cardiovascular System
Since we may gain weight without an enough sleep, we are also at high risk of problems to the cardiovascular system. Sleeps are essential for the body to heal and repair the blood vessels and heart. The heart will have a not enough rest and may affect the body at a higher risk of stroke, high blood pressure and heart diseases.

To conclude, no matter how busy we are, it is very vital for us to have a good night rest for us to live a greater day ahead. We are so aware of all these crippling effects of sleep deprivation yet we did not take any actions to prevent all these from happening. Preventing is better than treating. Don't wait until it is too late!
